On Wednesday, Trump stated that if Iran attacks ships in the Strait of Hormuz, "the United States will bomb bridges or power plants, including facilities within Tehran." Currently, Cushing inventories are approaching operational minimums, U.S. crude oil production has retreated from record highs, and both the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz are facing navigation risks. Goldman Sachs warns that if the Hormuz crisis continues to escalate, Brent crude could break through $120.

WTI crude oil has risen to around $88, reaching a six-week high, as geopolitical and fundamental factors—which previously diverged—have rarely converged as tightly as now.

Trump has shifted from vague threats to specifying coordinates within downtown Tehran; Cushing inventories continue to plummet toward operational minimums, and U.S. crude oil production is retreating from record highs—this resonance is systemically reducing the downside potential for oil prices.

On Wednesday, Trump stated explicitly on social media that if Iran attacks any vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, "the U.S. will bomb and destroy a bridge or power plant, including facilities near or inside Tehran."

On the same day, Secretary of State Rubio stressed that as long as Iran attempts to control maritime traffic, the U.S. military will continue its assault. War Secretary Hegseth and Trump jointly signaled an escalation in the conflict, with potential targets now extending to Yemen’s Houthi forces.

According to the latest DOE data, Cushing inventories fell another 674,000 barrels last week, deepening the "tank bottom" effect; although the rig count continues to rise, U.S. crude output declined from record highs last week; releases from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve accelerated in tandem.

Overall oil stocks are now below levels seen in late February when the U.S.-Iran conflict erupted. Goldman Sachs has warned that if the Persian Gulf chokepoint crisis deteriorates further, Brent crude oil could break above $120.

Geographic Anchoring of Threats: Downtown Tehran Now on the Target List

The core variable in Trump’s latest statements is the significant improvement in geographic precision. The announcement that targets "near or inside Tehran" are now explicitly included as strike coordinates has been interpreted by the crude market as a sign of further escalation.

Rubio reiterated that the U.S. military will continue attacks on Iran "as long as it tries to control maritime traffic." Trump and Hegseth have simultaneously signaled the potential for broader conflict, possibly extending to Yemen’s Houthi forces.

The Persian Gulf’s shipping volumes have steadily shrunk in recent weeks. If the Houthi front also heats up, both the Red Sea and Strait of Hormuz could face navigation risks, further exposing the fragility of global energy supply chains.

This escalation is occurring at a particularly vulnerable time for the energy markets. Overall oil inventories have fallen below levels from late February when the U.S.-Iran crisis began, and Ukraine’s continued attacks on Russian refineries have further tightened global supplies of diesel and other transport fuels.

Cushing’s “Tank Bottom” and Output Decline: Fundamentals Squeeze Independently

Even excluding geopolitical factors, the supply buffer in the U.S. crude market is systemically narrowing.

Cushing, the core WTI futures delivery hub, saw stocks fall another 674,000 barrels last week, continuing their decline. Approaching operational minimums means the spot price discovery mechanism will be more sensitive to marginal supply-demand changes.

U.S. crude oil output has dropped from record highs over the past week—even as drilling activity has climbed, undermining the domestic supply safety buffer.

It is worth noting that nationwide commercial crude oil inventories increased by 2.01 million barrels (the market expected a decrease of 500,000 barrels), gasoline inventories rose by 765,000 barrels, and distillate stocks were up 1.395 million barrels. Yet, the market is clearly focusing more on Cushing’s structural drawdown and output declines, rather than short-term fluctuations in overarching inventories.

Goldman Sachs has sounded the alarm, warning that if the Persian Gulf chokepoint crisis continues to worsen, Brent crude could break through $120—a projection based on Cushing’s ongoing narrowing inventory buffer and the dual scenario of possible disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.

$4 Gasoline: The Transmission Chain from Oil Markets to the Ballot Box

Rising oil prices are filtering down to U.S. consumers via higher retail gasoline prices, hitting both economic and political sensitivity thresholds.

$4 per gallon is widely seen as a critical threshold—above this point, low-income consumers typically begin cutting discretionary spending. This impacts average tickets and foot traffic at gas stations, convenience stores, and fast-food chains, further dampening consumer confidence and eroding Trump's poll numbers.

The core pricing variable in the crude market is: the improvement in the precision of geopolitical threats and the continued decline of Cushing’s inventories are systematically limiting the downside for oil prices, while ceasefire expectations—which previously pushed oil lower—have significantly diminished.
