A major US pension fund has increased its investment in Strategy, adding to the trend of institutional investors seeking exposure to Bitcoin through publicly traded companies.

Louisiana State Employees’ Retirement System boosts holdings

The Louisiana State Employees’ Retirement System (LASERS) raised its stake in Strategy, a business intelligence company known for the largest corporate Bitcoin treasury, to 21,300 shares. Data from BitcoinTreasuries.NET values this position at approximately $2.13 million.

This marks an expansion of LASERS’ earlier position in Strategy, reflecting a continued interest in Bitcoin as an asset class. Instead of reducing its exposure, the fund opted to deepen its involvement as Strategy intensifies its Bitcoin-focused approach.

The Louisiana fund’s move signals growing acceptance of Bitcoin exposure in traditional investment portfolios, allowing government retirement assets to participate in the digital asset market without direct crypto ownership.

Investing in Strategy stock enables LASERS to benefit from movements in the Bitcoin market without the need to buy or custody Bitcoin directly. The performance of Strategy shares is highly correlated with the company’s Bitcoin holdings.

Strategy: Corporate Bitcoin accumulation

Strategy, under the leadership of Executive Chairman Michael Saylor, has become a prominent player in corporate Bitcoin holdings. The company has fueled its Bitcoin acquisition through capital raises and debt financing, amassing a significant cryptocurrency reserve on its balance sheet.

By structuring itself as a Bitcoin treasury company, Strategy offers traditional investors a regulated avenue to access Bitcoin exposure. This is especially appealing to pension funds and institutions cautious about directly managing digital asset custody and the risks involved.

Indirect Bitcoin exposure trends

The latest investment by LASERS highlights a broader shift among institutional investors toward indirect Bitcoin exposure. While many pension funds traditionally avoided cryptocurrencies due to price volatility, some now pursue investment vehicles such as stocks of Bitcoin-holding companies, digital asset funds, or exchange-traded products.

Indirect investments like the one made by LASERS allow institutional portfolios to participate in digital asset gains while mitigating concerns related to cryptocurrency custody, regulatory uncertainty, and liquidity challenges.

The move aligns with a gradual integration of digital assets into long-term portfolio strategies in the retirement industry, a sector known for its cautious approach to risk and regulatory compliance.

As institutional adoption evolves, more retirement systems and pension funds may look to listed companies like Strategy to safely access the potential benefits of Bitcoin while navigating regulatory and operational constraints.
