⑴ Chicago Mercantile Exchange Group announced plans to launch a sorghum basis futures contract on August 24, 2026, aimed at providing market participants with a hedging tool to manage price spread fluctuations between sorghum and corn. The contract is currently pending regulatory approval.⑵ The contract will reflect the price differential between sorghum and corn, utilize physical delivery, and rely on Kansas's existing hard red winter wheat delivery network and storage facilities to ensure supply chain reliability and smooth delivery.⑶ The Global Head of Agricultural Products at CME noted that while sorghum prices have historically tracked closely with corn, geopolitical events and regional supply-demand changes often cause significant cash price spread volatility. In recent years, the spread has swung dramatically between deep discounts and notable premiums, highlighting the need for specialized risk management tools.⑷ In the second quarter of 2026, CME agricultural contract trading volume reached 2.1 million units, with corn futures and options open interest rising to 4.1 million units in the same period. Market activity remains vibrant, and the launch of the sorghum basis futures is seen as a strategic move for CME to expand its agricultural segment and meet the evolving needs of industry clients.
