The water level of the Rhine River in Germany has slightly rebounded due to rainfall in the south, but inland navigation authorities have made it clear that the fundamental problem of shallow water hindering shipping remains unsolved, and the water level is expected to drop again later this week.
This summer’s heatwave and continued lack of rain have caused frequent shoals in the river, with cargo ship loading rates maintained at only 20% to 30%. This has forced goods to be transported in smaller batches, directly driving up logistics costs for charterers and imposing additional burdens on riverside industries.
Taking the Kaub bottleneck as an example, the navigable water depth on Wednesday is expected to rise to 93 centimeters from about 81 centimeters on Monday, which temporarily increases cargo capacity for vessels. However, traders have pointed out that subsequent dry weather in the catchment area will cause water levels to drop again, and the warning has not been lifted.
The Danube River is facing the lowest flow rate for this period in the past thirty years, with flow in Romania less than one-third of the July average. This has led to ferry services being halted and grain barges stranded, highlighting the widespread drought crisis facing Europe’s inland waterways.
Shipping costs have soared as a direct reflection: freight rates for oil barges from Rotterdam to Karlsruhe have more than doubled since the end of June. As the Rhine is a major artery for commodities such as minerals, coal, and petroleum products, its disrupted navigation is continuously impacting the regional supply chain.
Market sentiment is restricted by uncertainties in weather forecasts. Traders are closely monitoring changes in rainfall, and any further drop in water levels below critical thresholds could trigger a new round of transport cost fluctuations and increase the risk of industrial delivery delays.
