U.S. President Trump, based on Section 338 of the 1930 U.S. Tariff Act, has imposed new tariffs on Canadian exported goods, which will take effect on August 19. According to the administrative announcement, Canada places U.S. businesses at a disadvantage by banning the import of American alcoholic products, restricting U.S. dairy products, and limiting certain American automobile exports. Rice University researcher Simon Lester said that it would be quite difficult to successfully challenge this in U.S. courts. Queen's University Associate Professor of International Law Nicolas Lamp believes these tariffs are a negotiation tactic aimed at weakening Canada’s bargaining position.
