Preliminary statistics released by the Japanese Ministry of Finance on July 22 show that Japan's trade deficit reached 1.01 trillion yen (approximately 6.4 billion USD) in the first half of 2026, marking the tenth consecutive half-year reporting a trade deficit.
In the first half of the year, Japan's goods exports increased by 13.7% year on year to 60.66 trillion yen, while imports rose by 10.7% to 61.68 trillion yen. Both exports and imports of electronic components such as semiconductors saw significant growth, serving as a major driving force for the expansion of foreign trade. In addition, automobile export growth supported overall export performance; on the import side, increased procurement of products such as non-ferrous metals also provided support.
By region, Japan's crude oil imports from the Middle East decreased, but imports of crude oil and petroleum products from the United States surged by 355.4% and 210.0% year on year respectively, reflecting Japan's accelerated diversification of energy import sources.
According to monthly data released on the same day, Japan's trade deficit for June was 406.9 billion yen, mainly due to persistently high import costs for crude oil.
