Whale cuts losses at lows to measure this round of semiconductor rebound; missed out on $1.66 million in potential recovery from a basket of long positions
BlockBeats news, on July 21, according to Hyperinsight monitoring, the previously tracked "long basket of semiconductor" whale closed out 8 long positions in technology stocks mainly focused on semiconductors and memory in the morning of July 17, with a total nominal closing amount of about 17.869 million USD, and an accumulated actual loss of about 9.681 million USD.
Compared to the closing prices on July 17, 6 out of 8 stocks have already recovered their losses. AI computing power stock NBIS rebounded the most (+16.0%), followed by MRVL (+13.0%) and CRCL (+12.0%). The three memory companies MU (+10.3%), SNDK (+9.4%), and SKHX (+6.6%) ranked in the middle; while domestic CXMT (-0.8%) and ZHIPU (-16.4%) still trade below their closing prices from that day. This round of recovery basically centers on US and Korean semiconductor stocks.
In retrospect, the sell-off almost happened at a stage low. Had the whale not acted at that time, the portfolio would theoretically have lost 1.6317 million USD less, which is 17% of the original loss. Detailed breakdown is as follows:
- Marvell (MRVL): average price 317.2 USD, closing average price 182.8 USD, actual loss 4.309 million USD; could have lost 744 thousand USD less;
- SanDisk (SNDK): average price 2183.6 USD, closing average price 1356.32 USD, actual loss 1.909 million USD; could have lost 287 thousand USD less;
- SK Hynix (SKHX): average price 1620.2 USD, closing average price 1175.3 USD, actual loss 1.865 million USD; could have lost 338 thousand USD less;
- Micron Technology (MU): average price 1111 USD, closing average price 826.2 USD, actual loss 510 thousand USD; could have lost 148 thousand USD less;
- Nebius (NBIS): average price 253.80 USD, closing average price 166.5 USD, actual loss 463 thousand USD; could have lost 144 thousand USD less;
- Circle (CRCL): average price 76.59 USD, closing average price 60.2 USD, actual loss 212 thousand USD; could have lost 95.1 thousand USD less;
- ZHIPU: average price 287.1 USD, closing average price 182.2 USD, actual loss 405 thousand USD; unrealized loss now expanded to 531.4 thousand USD if held till now;
- CXMT: average price 7.3 USD, closing average price 6.8 USD, actual loss about 5,808 USD; unrealized loss would be about 6,576 USD if held till now.
Note: The rebound only changed the extent of the loss. Since the whale chased at high prices, the current prices of all 8 stocks remain well below the original entry costs; even holding until today would not achieve break even. ZHIPU and CXMT prices are still 16.4% and 0.8% lower than their closing prices, respectively. For this whale, the decision on July 17 determined whether to lose 9.68 million USD or 8.02 million USD.
