Intel (INTC) Q2 Earnings Preview: Can AI CPU Momentum Overcome Margin Pressure?

1. Investment Highlights at a Glance

Intel is scheduled to report its 2026 Q2 earnings after the U.S. market close on July 23 (Thursday). Following a strong Q1 where revenue, non-GAAP gross margin, and non-GAAP EPS all beat management guidance, market expectations have risen sharply.

Wall Street Consensus Expectations: Revenue around $14.42 billion (+12% YoY, +6% QoQ), Non-GAAP gross margin ~39.3%, and Non-GAAP net income ~$1.15 billion. The company’s own guidance range is $13.8B–$14.8B.

The key focus areas are whether the DCAI (Data Center and AI) business can sustain strong growth and whether gross margins can hold steady amid product mix shifts — factors that will directly influence investor confidence in the company’s business transformation.

2. Three Major Focus Areas

Focus 1: Strength of DCAI Business Growth

AI CPU demand is the core engine driving Intel’s return to the data center spotlight. DCAI generated $5.1 billion in Q1 revenue. Management had guided for double-digit sequential growth in Q2, with consensus at $5.6 billion near the low end of expectations.

If actual revenue reaches $5.8–6.0 billion, it would provide strong evidence that AI inference, agent workloads, and increased server core counts are creating a sustainable CPU cycle. Investors should also watch Xeon 6 adoption rates, supply constraints, long-term customer contracts, and demand for custom ASICs/IPUs — Q1 ASIC revenue already rose more than 30% QoQ and nearly doubled YoY.

Potential Impact: Strong results could boost confidence in the AI CPU “renaissance” narrative and support upside in the stock; results merely in line with consensus would likely limit upside potential.

Focus 2: Gross Margin as the Real Litmus Test

Gross margin is more important than modest revenue beats for assessing profitability. Consensus Non-GAAP gross margin stands at 39.3% (company guidance 39%), with GAAP around 37.6%.

Panther Lake shipments are expected to surge 6–7x sequentially, but early-stage 18A process yields may weigh on overall margins. Achieving around 39.5% would signal that 18A process yields, pricing power, and factory productivity are improving faster than expected. Falling short could raise concerns that rising costs in memory, substrates, and other components mean volume growth is not yet translating into stronger profitability.

Focus 3: Foundry Segment Loss Narrowing and Q3 Guidance

 Foundry remains a key challenge in the transformation. Q1 segment revenue was $5.4 billion, but external foundry sales were only $174 million, with an operating loss of approximately $2.4 billion. Investors will scrutinize whether losses continue to narrow as 18A process capacity and yields improve, along with updates on 14A process customer validation and advanced packaging demand.

Q3 guidance with a midpoint above $15 billion — supported by continued DCAI growth and stable margins — would likely drive further upward revisions to full-year estimates. Overly cautious guidance might suggest that first-half profit improvements were driven more by supply recovery and inventory normalization than structural gains.

3. Risks and Opportunities Coexist

Upside Catalysts:

  • DCAI revenue significantly beats expectations (nearing $6.0B), combined with strong Xeon 6 traction, reinforcing the AI CPU cycle story.
  • Gross margin exceeds forecasts (approaching 40%), confirming faster-than-expected 18A progress and profitability recovery.
  • Faster-than-expected Foundry loss reduction plus upbeat Q3 guidance, boosting overall transformation confidence.

Downside Risks:

  • Both revenue and margins miss guidance, prompting doubts about volume-to-profit conversion.
  • Foundry losses fail to improve or Q3 guidance disappoints, heightening concerns over the capital-intensive turnaround.
  • Temporary profit gains from supply recovery prove unsustainable amid competitive pressures limiting AI CPU share gains.

4. Trading Strategy Suggestions

Bullish Case: Strong DCAI revenue, stable or better gross margins, and optimistic Q3 guidance would validate the AI CPU revival narrative and provide momentum for the stock.

Bearish Risks: In-line results lacking positive surprises, or negative signals on Foundry/margins, could trigger profit-taking and pressure the stock.

Key Metrics to Watch:

  • DCAI revenue (target $5.8–6.0B)
  • Non-GAAP gross margin (39.5%+ as a positive signal)
  • Degree of Foundry loss narrowing
  • Q3 revenue guidance midpoint (above $15B)

Trading Suggestions:

  • Monitor options market sentiment pre-earnings (currently showing bullish tilt);
  • In beat scenarios, consider dip-buying or trend-following with position management;
  • In miss scenarios, exercise caution and respect stop-loss levels;
  • Always align with overall portfolio risk tolerance and market conditions.
