A study by Nikkei News shows that with the surge in artificial intelligence investments, the hidden debt of major US tech giants has increased eightfold in just four years, reaching an estimated $1.65 trillion. This figure exceeds their actual debts on the books, making it more difficult for investors to assess related risks. Nikkei News analyzed recent financial statements and other data from Google’s parent company Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, and Oracle. Among them, Meta’s off-balance-sheet debt is particularly high, at about $420 billion—almost three times its recorded debt on the books.
