- On July 20 local time, the command of the multinational coalition led by Saudi Arabia issued a statement announcing that the coalition has begun taking measures to protect the vessels of alliance countries passing through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Coalition spokesperson Turki al-Maliki stated that the command is undertaking all necessary military actions and rigorous measures to ensure the safe passage of alliance vessels through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
- The coalition statement emphasized that the relevant actions comply with international law and the provisions of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and that any threats by Houthi forces against commercial ships would be firmly countered. The statement also characterized such acts as blatant violations of international law and as illegal conduct at sea.
- This military operation by the coalition is a direct response to the Houthis’ announcement on the same day of a maritime blockade against Saudi Arabia. Houthi spokesperson Saraya declared a ban on Saudi maritime shipping based on the “an eye for an eye” principle in response to Saudi Arabia’s nearly 12-year land, sea, and air blockade of Yemen. Previously, the Houthis had accused Saudi Arabia of airstrikes against airports under their control, and had retaliated with missile and drone attacks into Saudi territory.
- The Bab el-Mandeb Strait connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and serves as a vital chokepoint linking the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Indian Ocean. Approximately 12% to 15% of global maritime trade passes through this route. After shipping in the Strait of Hormuz was hindered due to the US-Iran conflict, the Bab el-Mandeb Strait became a crucial alternative route for Saudi oil exports. Analysts warn that any disruption in the strait would further intensify pressure on global energy supplies.
