Revolution in Advanced Packaging Materials: The Hundred-Billion-Dollar Glass Substrate Market Sets Sail, From "Technology Verification" to "Eve of Mass Production"
Glass substrates are transitioning from "technology verification" to the "eve of mass production," and 2026 is expected to be the inaugural year for small-scale commercial shipments of glass substrates in the semiconductor packaging field. As AI computing chips rapidly evolve towards larger sizes and higher integration, traditional organic substrates are nearing their physical limits—the five major issues of high-temperature warping, signal loss, heat dissipation bottlenecks, insufficient interconnect density, and increasing prominence. Glass substrates are emerging as the core strategic material for next-generation advanced packaging layouts by industry giants such as TSMC, Intel, and Samsung, thanks to their thermal expansion coefficient highly matched with silicon, ultra-low dielectric loss, TGV aspect ratio up to 20:1, linewidth below 2μm, and significant cost potential.
TSMC Chairman C.C. Wei simultaneously revealed that they are building a pilot production line for CoPoS packaging technology, estimating that it will enter the mass production phase in a few years. The long-term goal is to replace silicon interposers with glass substrates to reduce costs, improve production efficiency, and meet the enormous demand from AI chip clients. Intel has invested more than $1 billion in Arizona to build dedicated research and mass production lines for glass substrates and officially announced that glass substrate technology will enter large-scale mass production in January 2026. LG Display has officially entered the glass substrate business and established a dedicated project team. Apple is deepening its self-developed AI hardware layout and has started testing advanced glass substrates for its AI server chips code-named "Baltra."
