Export inflation follows oil price surge, U.S. export-driven price pressures reach a new stage peak

The U.S. Export Price Index annual rate in March surged to 5.6%, accelerating sharply by 2.1 percentage points from the previous value of 3.5%. This figure clearly reflects that soaring energy costs and ongoing supply chain frictions are being transmitted outward through trade channels, causing the U.S., as the world’s marginal price setter, to experience export-driven inflationary pressure that has moved beyond moderate levels. Considering that the full effect of Hormuz supply disruptions on offshore crude oil and refined product prices has not yet been fully accounted for, there is inertia for further upward momentum in export prices in the coming months. This data, together with persistently high import prices, creates an internal and external resonance, further narrowing the Federal Reserve’s dual policy space to simultaneously accommodate growth and inflation when responding to geopolitical shocks.
