Palantir is at the center of a fierce battle between bulls and bears. Well-known short seller Michael Burry has made a high-profile bet against the stock, causing a ripple in the market; shortly after, Trump voiced his strong support, intensifying the debate surrounding Palantir’s valuation and competitive prospects.

This week, Burry posted on social media claiming that AI startup Anthropic is "taking Palantir’s lunch," and revealed he had established a large short position. Affected by this, Palantir’s stock price came under pressure—adding to a nearly 25% decline year-to-date—fueling market concerns over its lofty valuation.

After the

Trump quickly responded. On social media, he wrote: "Palantir Technologies has proven to possess outstanding combat abilities and equipment. Go ask our enemies!!! President DJT."

After the

Boosted by this, Palantir’s shares rose as much as 5% intraday, but ultimately still closed down 1.8%, failing to fully recover this week’s losses. Notably, after Trump’s statement, Burry quickly published a blog post declaring he would not cover his position and that he remains bearish.

Short Pressure: Burry Bets Palantir Will Lose to AI Newcomer

Michael Burry became famous for shorting the U.S. housing market before the 2008 financial crisis, a story later portrayed in the movie "The Big Short."

This week, he posted on social media that Anthropic is eroding Palantir’s market share, and although he later deleted the post, his bearish stance had already been disclosed.

Burry’s judgment hit a nerve with the market. Analysts and investors had already expressed concerns about Palantir’s high valuation, while Anthropic, valued at $380 billion and rapidly expanding its enterprise AI tools, is seen as a direct threat to Palantir’s business model.

Palantir’s stock has fallen nearly a quarter so far this year. Burry’s remarks undoubtedly intensified market pessimism. After Trump’s post, Burry reiterated his bearish viewpoint on his blog, stating explicitly that he would not close his short position, indicating the divide over Palantir is unlikely to be resolved soon.

Analysts point out that Palantir’s core dilemma is: its deep ties with the U.S. government provide a stable revenue source and political shelter, but its high valuation makes it extremely sensitive to any narrative of competitive threat.

Palantir continued to win new contracts during Trump’s second term, showing clear business expansion momentum, yet the significant pullback in its shares this year reveals persistent market doubts over whether it can defend its share in the commercial AI space. Burry’s short thesis is a bet on exactly this—as Anthropic and other AI-native firms accelerate their incursion into the enterprise market, Palantir’s competitive moat may erode.

It is worth noting that while Palantir and Anthropic cooperate on classified military projects, their competitive dynamic in the commercial AI market is attracting growing investor attention.

Palantir’s Deep Ties with the Trump Administration

Trump’s support is not accidental; Palantir has developed deep interests with the current administration.

According to media reports, in terms of government contracts, Palantir maintains close collaboration with multiple U.S. federal agencies. Its Maven intelligence system has been widely integrated by the Pentagon, providing real-time data analysis for military operations including those related to Iran.

The company has also signed multiple new contracts worth billions of dollars with the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, directly participating in highly controversial immigration enforcement efforts during the Trump administration.

On the political front, several former Palantir employees have taken positions within the government, and the company has hired Washington lobbyists with close White House ties.

CEO Alex Karp previously supported the Democratic Party but donated $1 million to Trump’s Maga Inc super PAC in 2024. Subsequently, he dined with Trump at the White House and accompanied him on a trip to Saudi Arabia.
