Iran's impact weakens in Asia, but volatility in the Indian stock market remains high

Golden Ten Data reported on March 20 that the volatility of the Indian stock market has consistently been higher than other regions in Asia, indicating that investors have stronger concerns regarding India's energy dependence, high valuations, and corporate governance issues. India's volatility index remains close to its peak on March 9, which is the highest level since June 2024. For Japan and South Korea, both countries heavily reliant on fuel transported through the Strait of Hormuz, their respective volatility indicators have retreated from the highs reached due to the Iran war. The Chicago Board Options Exchange Volatility Index has also declined. This divergence suggests that, in the context of an energy crisis impacting the economy, India's risk premium is becoming increasingly stubborn. Even before the conflict, India faced challenges such as high valuations, the risk of AI technology disruption due to the lack of prominent chip manufacturers, and currency depreciation. The recent sell-off has pushed the country's stock index close to the level seen a year ago when US tariff hikes triggered market turmoil, while at the same time, governance concerns have erupted at the country's largest private bank.

BUZZ - RBC expects gradual improvement in North American and European building materials stocks in the third quarter

October 9 - RBC expects the performance of most European building material products to gradually improve quarter-on-quarter in Q3, but notes that geopolitical uncertainties in the US will continue to drive up cost inflation and increase market volatility. RBC anticipates that sales in Europe will remain sluggish due to heatwaves and rising mortgage rates, while a weak US housing market and the lack of a significant hurricane season will prompt roofing material companies to enter a destocking cycle. The firm is more optimistic about Germany’s Heidelberg Group (HEIG.DE), upgrading its rating to “outperform,” and points out that the company has handled the challenging quarter caused by extreme weather far better than its peers. Due to severe cost headwinds such as rising diesel and natural gas prices, RBC downgraded the ratings of US and French construction companies Knife River (KNF.N) and Saint-Gobain (SGOB.PA) from “outperform” to “market perform.” (For the convenience of non-English speakers, Reuters automatically translates its reports into several other languages.
