Japanese Yen remains steady around 159.00 as BoJ anticipated to take a more hawkish stance
USD/JPY Faces Continued Downward Pressure
The USD/JPY currency pair is experiencing its third consecutive day of declines, hovering close to the 159.00 level during Wednesday's Asian trading session. This weakness is largely attributed to renewed strength in the Japanese Yen, as speculation grows that the Bank of Japan (BoJ) may adopt a more assertive stance at its upcoming policy meeting. Concerns over inflation are being heightened by both the Yen's depreciation and surging oil prices linked to ongoing tensions involving Iran.
Nevertheless, the Bank of Japan is widely anticipated to maintain its current interest rates unchanged on Thursday, as policymakers evaluate the potential economic fallout from instability in the Middle East. In parallel, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is scheduled to meet with US President Donald Trump, following the withdrawal of a US request for Japan to send naval forces to the Strait of Hormuz.
The US Dollar remains resilient against other major currencies, buoyed by cautious investor sentiment ahead of the Federal Reserve’s policy announcement. Data from the CME FedWatch Tool indicates that most market participants expect the Fed to keep its benchmark rate steady within the 3.50% to 3.75% range. Should this hold true, it would represent a second straight meeting without a rate change, underscoring the central bank’s prudent approach amid persistent economic and geopolitical challenges.
Market participants are also looking for insights from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell regarding how the recent surge in oil prices might shape future policy direction. Oil prices may continue to climb after US military actions targeted Iranian coastal positions near the Strait of Hormuz, citing threats to international shipping from anti-ship missiles, according to Reuters. Additionally, the BBC reported that Israel has taken responsibility for airstrikes that resulted in the deaths of high-ranking Iranian officials, including Ali Larijani and Basij leader Gholamreza Soleimani.
