Gold remains stable around $5,000 as markets await Fed rate announcement
Gold Price Holds Steady Ahead of Fed Decision
During early Wednesday trading in Asia, gold (XAU/USD) remains largely unchanged, hovering close to the significant $5,000 mark. Market participants are adopting a cautious stance as they await the upcoming interest rate announcement from the US Federal Reserve.
Geopolitical Tensions Support Safe-Haven Demand
Conflict in Iran continues without resolution. In recent developments, Israel reported the killing of Iran’s security chief, Ali Larijani. Meanwhile, Tehran allegedly set fire to a major natural gas field in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) overnight. US President Donald Trump has also threatened to intensify military action against Kharg Island, Iran’s primary oil export terminal. These escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly between Iran and the UAE, are likely to enhance the appeal of traditional safe-haven assets like gold.
Inflation Concerns and Interest Rate Outlook
Rising oil prices have fueled worries about higher inflation, leading investors to scale back expectations for imminent US interest rate reductions. This environment tends to put pressure on assets that do not generate yield, such as gold. Economists at Goldman Sachs now anticipate that the Federal Reserve will lower rates in September and December, a shift from their earlier forecast of cuts in June and September.
“When oil prices climb, inflation follows. If inflation remains elevated, central banks are less likely to reduce rates as aggressively as they might have six months ago, which could be unfavorable for gold prices,” explained Bob Haberkorn, senior market strategist at RJO Futures.
Focus on the Federal Reserve’s Next Steps
The Federal Reserve is broadly expected to keep its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 3.50% to 3.75% during its March meeting. Investors will closely monitor comments from Fed Chair Jerome Powell following the decision for further guidance. Any indications of a more aggressive policy stance could strengthen the US Dollar (USD) and potentially put downward pressure on gold prices, which are denominated in USD.
