US stock market today: S&P 500 futures fall as Brent crude oil surpasses $100.
- S&P 500 futures are down today amid pressure from oil prices.
- Brent crude oil above $100 today, prompting caution.
- The Fed should keep interest rates unchanged and limit gains in stocks.
Tuesday, March 17, 2026 – Stock market futures are trading slightly lower today, down 0,30%, with contracts linked to the S&P 500 standing out at 6,737.25 points, following a recent recovery that interrupted three consecutive weeks of losses on Wall Street. The movement reflects a still cautious environment, influenced by macroeconomic factors and the rise in Brent crude oil prices today.

In the energy sector, the market continues to react to developments involving Iran. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that Iranian oil tankers are authorized to cross the Strait of Hormuz. However, demands from current US President Donald Trump for a multinational force to escort vessels remain unanswered, keeping the geopolitical risk on the radar.
This context sustains the volatility in oil prices. After a drop of more than 5% in the previous session, contracts rose again. The price of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude was trading near US$95, while Brent crude remained above US$100 for the third consecutive session.
At the same time, signs of increased supply are helping to limit sharper price movements. The U.S. Department of Energy has begun preparations to release some of its strategic reserves, while the International Energy Agency has indicated the possibility of expanding the use of emergency stockpiles.
In the monetary field, investors' focus is on the Federal Reserve's decision. The prevailing expectation is that interest rates will remain unchanged, with a 99,1% probability of stability, according to CME FedWatch. Concerns about inflation continue to reduce bets on rate cuts in the short term.
Among the corporate highlights, Nvidia's GTC event drew attention. CEO Jensen Huang announced new deals and projected that the company could reach $1 trillion in chip sales by the end of 2027, boosting the technology sector.
Furthermore, earnings season remains on the radar, with results expected from Tencent, DocuSign, and Oklo, which could influence market performance throughout the week.
