Argentina blocks Polymarket after suspicions over inflation data.
- Polymarket blocked in Argentina for insider trading.
- Regulator points to illegal cryptocurrency operation without a license.
- Ban strengthens control over forecast markets in Latin America.
Argentine authorities have ordered a nationwide ban on the Polymarket prediction platform, increasing regulatory pressure on services that use cryptocurrencies for betting on real-world events.
The order was issued by Judge Susana Parada in Buenos Aires and enforced by ENACOM, the agency responsible for telecommunications and internet in the country. The measure obliges providers and app stores to block access to the platform on both Android and iOS devices.
The freeze occurred after Polymarket accurately predicted February's inflation data before its official release by INDEC. The incident drew the attention of authorities and raised concerns about potential leaks of sensitive economic information.
According to analyses, low-value bets were identified, placed at unusual times from accounts that normally operated with minimal volumes. This behavior raised suspicions of insider trading within the predictions market.
Reports indicate that LOTBA and CASCBA filed formal complaints, which were later reinforced by investigations conducted by specialized gambling agencies and the local Public Prosecutor's Office. The investigations concluded that the platform operated as an online betting system without legal authorization.
Another point highlighted by the authorities was the ease of creating accounts and the absence of robust age verification mechanisms. The acceptance of payments with cryptocurrencies and credit cards was also considered a risk factor, especially regarding access by minors.
The decision has generated mixed reactions in the market. While some analysts consider the measure necessary to protect users and ensure regulatory compliance, others warn that the ban could limit access to global forecasting tools based on decentralized data.
With this measure, Argentina joins Colombia, which had already banned the platform after classifying it as an illegal operation due to lack of a license. The move signals increased scrutiny of platforms that combine betting, economic data, and cryptocurrencies in Latin America.
