WTI hovers near $100 as Trump urges partners to ensure Hormuz remains secure and accessible
WTI Oil Prices Edge Down Amid Geopolitical Tensions
During Monday's European session, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures on the NYMEX slipped slightly, hovering around $98.00. The recent four-day surge in oil prices has lost momentum, with the commodity struggling to break above the $100 mark. This comes after US President Donald Trump urged major oil-importing nations from the Gulf region to participate in joint efforts to counter Iranian military activities near the Strait of Hormuz.
President Trump stated on Truth.Social, "Numerous countries, particularly those impacted by Iran's attempts to block the Hormuz Strait, will deploy warships alongside the United States to ensure the passage remains open and secure." He further expressed hope that nations such as China, France, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and others affected by these constraints would contribute naval forces to eliminate threats in the region.
The President's push to keep the Strait of Hormuz—through which a fifth of the world's oil supply passes—open has slightly lifted optimism that supply disruptions may soon be addressed.
In a related development, oil loadings at the Fujairah port in the United Arab Emirates were suspended following a drone strike, sparking concerns about further interruptions in the oil supply chain. Since Fujairah is the UAE's only export terminal outside the Strait of Hormuz, this suspension suggests a halt in the country's oil exports for the time being.
