EUR/JPY holds steady as the Euro strengthens amid hopes for geopolitical improvement, while concerns over possible intervention remain
EUR/JPY Holds Steady as Markets Weigh Geopolitical and Economic Factors
As of Monday, the EUR/JPY pair is hovering near 182.40, showing little movement after two straight days of losses. The currency cross has found some stability, with the Euro (EUR) receiving modest support against other major currencies.
The Euro has been buoyed by a more optimistic geopolitical outlook. According to The Guardian, US Energy Secretary Chris Wright anticipates that the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran could conclude within the coming weeks. If this scenario unfolds, oil supplies may return to normal, potentially easing the strain on global energy prices.
Nevertheless, the prospects for the Euro remain uncertain. The recent spike in energy costs has underscored the Eurozone’s sensitivity to energy disruptions, which could negatively impact its trade balance. In response, money markets have adjusted their forecasts, now expecting the European Central Bank (ECB) to implement two interest rate increases this year—a notable change from last month’s expectations of no policy adjustments.
Attention is now turning to the ECB’s next policy meeting on March 19. ECB President Christine Lagarde is anticipated to address how the central bank plans to tackle inflationary pressures stemming from Middle East tensions. Markets are currently factoring in two 25-basis-point rate hikes, likely to occur in June and September.
Geopolitical Developments Impacting the Euro
On the international stage, French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized the urgent need to restore safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. He also called on Iran’s president to immediately cease what he described as unacceptable attacks on neighboring countries, including Lebanon and Iraq.
Japanese Yen Gains Support Amid Official Warnings
The EUR/JPY pair may encounter further challenges as the Japanese Yen (JPY) attracts renewed interest. Japanese officials have intensified their warnings about abrupt currency fluctuations. Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama stated that the government is closely observing foreign exchange trends and is prepared to intervene decisively if required.
Additionally, over the weekend, Japan and South Korea released a rare joint statement expressing deep concern about the rapid weakening of both the Japanese Yen and the Korean Won (KRW). Tokyo also confirmed that it is maintaining unusually close communication with US authorities regarding currency market movements.
Bank of Japan Policy Outlook
The Bank of Japan (BoJ) is widely expected to keep its policy rate steady at 0.75% at its upcoming meeting, while leaving open the possibility of further tightening. However, with oil prices climbing due to the conflict with Iran, some analysts suggest that a surprise rate hike cannot be entirely dismissed. Investors will be watching closely for remarks from BoJ Governor Kazuo Ueda to gauge how rising energy costs might influence inflation and economic growth in Japan.
