Oil Tanker Transits Hormuz Strait Again, Iran Says Waterway Only Closed to ‘Enemy’
BlockBeats News, March 16th, according to ship tracking data, a Aframax tanker named "Karachi" has successfully passed through the Strait of Hormuz and is currently heading towards Pakistan. This is one of the few tankers that have successfully left the Persian Gulf since the US launched attacks on Iran.
Data shows that the tanker is controlled by the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation and completed its passage through the channel near the Iranian coast last Sunday, and is now appearing in the waters near Sohar. Recently, vessels passing through the strait have generally chosen to sail close to the Iranian side to reduce risks.
Due to the escalation of regional conflicts, shipping in the strategic chokepoint of the Strait of Hormuz, which accounts for about 20% of global oil transportation, was once close to a standstill, and countries are closely watching for any resumption of vessel traffic. Meanwhile, some countries have negotiated passage arrangements with Tehran, such as India obtaining permission to allow two LPG tankers to pass through the strait.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that the Strait of Hormuz is not completely closed but is "only closed to vessels from hostile countries." Iran's new leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has also said that Tehran will still retain the strategic leverage of "closing the strait."
As the current Middle East conflict enters its third week, the risks of strait shipping continue to rise. Trump has called on multiple countries to send warships to escort merchant ships to restore the waterway, but allied countries like Japan have not yet indicated their participation. Industry insiders believe that even if the situation eases, it may take several weeks for full resumption of strait shipping.

Latest Update October 8 – Pacira BioSciences (PCRX.O) shares surged by 44%, hitting a more than three-year high at $36.30. If the rally holds, PCRX is poised for its largest single-day gain on record. Pharmaceutical company Viatris (VTRS.O) will acquire Pacira BioSciences in a $1.65 billion cash deal, offering $36.50 per share. The offer represents a premium of approximately 44.8% over Pacira’s recent closing price of $25.20. The transaction will add Pacira’s non-opioid pain medications Exparel and Zilretta to Viatris' product portfolio. Viatris shares fell 2.6% to $17.04. JPMorgan stated: “We believe this acquisition will not significantly alter VTRS' overall financial profile in the short or long term, and expect Exparel’s sales to gradually decline post-2030 due to generic market entry.” Both parties expect to complete the transaction by the end of 2026. Including intraday fluctuations, PCRX shares have risen 40.2% year-to-date, while VTRS has gained 36.8%.
