Billionaire Stanley Druckenmiller says payment systems may migrate to stablecoins.
- Stablecoins could dominate global payments in 10 to 15 years.
- Blockchain increases efficiency and reduces financial costs.
- Bitcoin remains a strong brand among investors.
Billionaire investor Stanley Druckenmiller stated that global payment systems may migrate to blockchain-based solutions and stablecoins in the coming decades. The statement was made during a recorded interview for Morgan Stanley, recently released.
During the conversation, the former founder of Duquesne Capital highlighted that blockchain technology can significantly improve the efficiency of the global financial infrastructure. According to him, tokenization and the use of stablecoins can make payments faster, cheaper, and more efficient.
“Blockchain and the use of stablecoins — if you want to include cryptocurrencies in that — tokens, are incredibly useful in terms of productivity,” said Druckenmiller.
The investor also indicated that the transformation of the financial system may occur gradually. In his view, technological evolution tends to favor digital payment systems based on blockchain.
"I imagine that, in 10 or 15 years, all our payment systems will be based on stablecoins — more efficient, faster, and cheaper," he added.
The discussion is taking place at a time when stablecoins are gaining relevance in the global financial system. The sector's growth is attracting the attention of financial institutions as well as authorities responsible for economic policies.
In recent years, the market for these digital assets has experienced strong growth. The total market capitalization of stablecoins has reached approximately US$300 billion, reflecting the advance of institutional adoption and the growing interest in blockchain-based payment solutions.
Authorities in Washington have also begun discussing the role of these digital currencies in the United States financial system. Some policymakers argue that dollar-backed stablecoins could expand the international presence of the American currency.
Patrick Witt, executive director of the President's Council of Advisors for Digital Assets, recently stated that stablecoins aligned with the GENIUS Act could attract new deposits to the US banking system by expanding global demand for dollar-denominated assets.
Despite optimism about digital payment systems, Druckenmiller maintains a critical view of the original proposal of cryptocurrencies as a store of value.
“Cryptocurrencies? I said this a long time ago and I’ll say it again,” he said. “It’s a solution looking for a problem.”
Nevertheless, the investor acknowledges that major digital assets have gained traction among institutional investors over the years. He believes cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin have evolved into a globally recognized and widely traded financial brand.
