Factbox-ECB officials minimize urgency for immediate measures against rising energy expenses
Oil Prices Surge and ECB's Response
In just over a week, oil prices have soared by approximately 60% due to the ongoing conflict in Iran. This sharp increase has led financial markets to anticipate that the European Central Bank (ECB) might consider raising interest rates to address inflation fueled by higher energy costs. Currently, traders are factoring in about 40 basis points of rate hikes for the year.
Recent Comments from ECB Officials
Isabel Schnabel, a member of the ECB's executive board, commented on March 6:
- “With inflation expected to align with our target over the medium term and expectations remaining stable, our monetary policy is well positioned.”
- “However, the recent surge in energy prices linked to tensions in Iran has increased uncertainty around the inflation outlook.”
