USD/JPY Forecast: Intervention guidelines have been redefined
New Dynamics in USD/JPY Intervention
On Friday, the landscape for USD/JPY shifted significantly as the approach to intervention appears to have evolved, aligning with the political interests of both Japan and the United States. Rather than acting alone and after the fact, authorities now seem to be taking a unified and proactive stance to support the yen. This strategy relies more on sending signals to the market than on tapping into currency reserves, and it is being implemented even in relatively stable market conditions, rather than waiting for volatility to spike.
For Japan, the motivation is straightforward. The depreciation of the yen has moved beyond being a simple market development and has become a matter of political concern, directly contributing to rising costs for food and imports at a sensitive time.
