The debate over the future of digital finance took center stage at Davos. Jeremy Allaire, CEO of the publicly listed stablecoin issuer Circle, asserted that interest payments on stablecoins do not pose a threat to banks, dismissing regulatory fears as “totally absurd.”

Stablecoin yields and bank runs

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Jeremy Allaire pushed back on claims that stablecoin yields could trigger bank runs, calling the argument overstated and pointing to long-standing examples of reward-based financial products already in use.

He said yield features improve customer retention and adoption, while the returns themselves are too small to pose any meaningful threat to monetary policy.

His remarks came as policymakers debated the role of stablecoin yields in the context of the proposed US CLARITY Act, which seeks to establish a federal framework for digital asset markets.

Allaire noted that the sector is extending familiar financial models rather than introducing new systemic risks.

Weak employment data have not eliminated inflation concerns, while AI and on-chain finance face growing scrutiny over commercial viability. This week's CPI release and major bank earnings will provide important tests of growth and inflation pressures. Revenue recognition and reporting practices in AI, underlying asset rights in RWA, and operating costs for Layer 2 networks are also becoming increasingly important measures of commercial viability. 3.
