Vitalik Buterin: We need more and better DAOs, not just treasuries controlled solely by token voting

According to Odaily, Vitalik Buterin published an article stating that the current crypto industry’s practice of DAOs has deviated from the original vision, and it is necessary to rethink and build “different and better DAO designs.” Vitalik pointed out that Ethereum’s initial conception was deeply inspired by decentralized autonomous organizations, but nowadays DAOs are often simplified to “token-vote-controlled treasuries.” Although this form can operate, it is inefficient, easily manipulated, and fails to truly alleviate the problems brought by human political games.

Vitalik emphasized that DAOs are still indispensable infrastructure, with application scenarios including: improving oracle design, enabling on-chain dispute arbitration, maintaining various critical lists, quickly launching short-term collaborative projects, and supporting long-term project maintenance after the original team exits. He believes that the current issue does not lie in participants’ motivations, but rather in the inadequacy of governance and oracle system designs themselves.

Regarding governance frameworks, Vitalik introduced the analytical perspective of “concavity and convexity issues,” arguing that different types of problems require different governance structures: for scenarios favoring consensus and robustness, broad participation and resistance to manipulation should be prioritized; whereas for scenarios requiring decisive action, leadership is permissible, but should be balanced by decentralization mechanisms.

Vitalik further pointed out that for DAOs to truly function, they must address two major challenges: privacy and decision fatigue. This can be alleviated by leveraging privacy technologies such as zero-knowledge proofs (ZK) and multi-party computation, as well as AI and consensus-based communication tools to ease the governance burden. He stressed that AI should not replace human judgment, but rather serve as a tool to amplify and assist human intent.

Finally, Vitalik stated that future DAO designs need to treat governance mechanisms, privacy technologies, and communication layers as core components rather than auxiliary modules, to ensure that the decentralization and robustness of Ethereum’s underlying layer are continued in its upper-layer applications.
