Gold Surges to New Record Highs Amid Global Uncertainty

Gold (XAU/USD) continued its upward momentum on Wednesday, climbing to an unprecedented peak above $4,630 just before the US markets opened. The precious metal is benefiting from persistent safe-haven interest, fueled by ongoing geopolitical strife and moderate inflation data from the United States.

On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump encouraged Iranian citizens to persist in their demonstrations, assuring them that assistance was forthcoming as reports suggested that thousands may have suffered under Tehran’s crackdown. At the same time, recent US inflation statistics have dampened expectations for an immediate Federal Reserve rate reduction, though the possibility of two rate cuts in 2026 remains on the table.

Technical Outlook: Signs of Exhaustion in Gold’s Uptrend

At the time of reporting, XAU/USD is trading at a record $4,634. The prevailing trend remains bullish, supported by upward-sloping moving averages. However, technical signals are beginning to indicate that the rally may be losing steam.

  • The 4-hour Relative Strength Index (RSI) is hovering just below the overbought threshold, showing a bearish divergence.
  • The Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) indicator is turning downward, with its histogram shrinking—both signs that upward momentum could be fading.

Should gold remain above $4,630, the next resistance levels are projected at the 127.2% and 161.8% Fibonacci extensions from the January 8–12 rally, located at $4,689 and $4,763, respectively. On the downside, support can be found at Tuesday’s low near $4,570 and at the January 2 low, just under $4,500.

UBS: US Companies’ Capex Willingness Rebounds from Bottom, Further Rate Hikes May Have Limited Impact on Economy

UBS believes that traditional U.S. investments have been subdued for a long time and are at a low level, with limited room for further rate hikes to have an impact. Meanwhile, corporate operating cash flow has increased by 25%, providing sufficient internal funds, which may weaken the transmission effect of interest rates on Capex. As capital expenditure willingness rebounds from historic lows and non-AI investments show signs of stabilization, U.S. corporate investment may be entering a recovery phase.
