JPMorgan executive expresses stance on "interest-bearing stablecoins": firmly opposes the emergence of a parallel banking system outside the existing regulatory framework
BlockBeats News, January 14, during JPMorgan's fourth-quarter earnings call on Tuesday, stablecoins became a topic of discussion. The bank's executives expressed support for blockchain technology while warning that certain stablecoin designs could pose a threat to the regulated banking system.
JPMorgan Chief Financial Officer Jeremy Barnum stated that the bank's position aligns with the purpose of the GENIUS Act, which aims to establish regulatory safeguards for stablecoin issuance.
Barnum warned against interest-bearing stablecoins that might replicate traditional banking business without corresponding regulation. "Creating a parallel banking system with all the characteristics of the banking industry—including deposits that look very much like interest-bearing deposits—without the prudential safeguards that have developed over hundreds of years of banking regulation is clearly a dangerous and undesirable practice," he said.
Barnum added that while JPMorgan welcomes competition and innovation, it firmly opposes the emergence of a parallel banking system outside the existing regulatory protection framework.
