OpenAI o3 Dominates to Win AI Chess Tournament, Musk’s Grok Shut Out in Finals

BlockBeats News, August 14 — Last week, OpenAI’s o3 model defeated xAI’s Grok 4 in an international AI chess competition, claiming the championship. The event, called the “AI Chess Exhibition Match,” was held on Google’s Kaggle platform, where eight AI models competed in a three-day knockout tournament to determine the top three winners.

The competition required AI models to play chess without any specialized training, allowing them to acquire some chess knowledge from the internet before the event. In the finals, OpenAI’s o3 beat Grok 4 with a score of 4-0 to win the championship. Notably, o3 achieved a 4-0 score in all three of its matches, including a sweep against its counterpart o4 mini in the semifinals.

Earlier this year, in another tournament organized by chess master Levy Rozman, both Grok and ChatGPT lost to Stockfish, an AI system specifically designed for chess.
