Ripple’s XRP Ledger Teams Up with Wormhole for Cross-Chain Moves

Ripple’s XRP Ledger (XRPL) just took a big step toward playing nicer with other blockchains. The company announced today that it’s integrating with Wormhole, a major cross-chain protocol, to make it easier for assets and data to move between networks. The hookup will work on XRPL’s mainnet and its upcoming Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) sidechain—something Ripple’s been teasing for a while now.

What does this actually do? Well, according to Ripple, it’ll let developers shoot messages, shift tokens, and even issue new assets across different chains. It’s not exactly groundbreaking—plenty of projects are chasing cross-chain solutions—but for XRPL, it’s a way to stay relevant as bigger players like Ethereum and Solana dominate the conversation.

Why Wormhole Matters

Wormhole’s already got some heavy hitters using its tech, like BlackRock and Apollo. That’s probably why Ripple’s framing this as a win for “corporate finance” rather than just crypto traders. David Schwartz, Ripple’s CTO and one of XRPL’s creators, put it bluntly: “Cross-chain compatibility is essential for true mass adoption.” He’s not wrong, though it’s worth noting that “mass adoption” has been just around the corner for years now.

Still, the integration could make life easier for institutions dabbling in tokenized assets. Imagine a bank issuing a token on XRPL but needing it to hop over to Ethereum for a trade—this would let that happen without messy workarounds.

A Busy Month for Ripple

June hasn’t been quiet for Ripple. Earlier this month, XRPL started natively supporting Circle’s USDC stablecoin, which is a big deal for liquidity. Then DeFi platform Ondo Finance added XRPL to its list of networks for its Treasury-backed products. Oh, and that EVM-compatible sidechain? Ripple says it’s still on track for a Q2 launch, though deadlines in crypto tend to be… flexible.

The Wormhole integration might be the most practical move yet. It opens up connections to over 35 blockchains, which means developers can build apps that interact with smart contracts on other networks. That’s useful, though whether it’ll actually bring in new users is another question.

The Bottom Line

Ripple’s clearly trying to position XRPL as more than just a payments rail. With stablecoins, institutional DeFi, and now cross-chain bridges, it’s hedging its bets. Whether any of this moves the needle for XRP’s price—or real-world usage—is anyone’s guess.

But for now, at least, the ledger’s got a few more tricks up its sleeve.

The Citi report points out that the current macro environment is highly similar to the tightening cycle of 1988-1989, when the economy remained resilient and inflation pressures gradually accumulated, followed by a slowdown in economic activity before policies shifted to easing. During that tightening cycle, the Federal Reserve raised interest rates 16 times in a row.

Rare alliance of arch-rivals! Musk and Altman support Dario Amodei's call to "slow down AI globally"

Anthropic's Amodei issued a call to "slow down AI globally," and to everyone's surprise, rivals Musk and Altman both publicly endorsed the initiative. The three industry giants unanimously agreed to grant third-party access to "employee-level" evaluation rights and to implement coordinated deceleration measures. Altman went further, announcing that OpenAI will not IPO this year. The resignation of a researcher and a collective breakout of uncontrollable AI systems have ignited long-standing industry fears.
