Ripple is preparing a major move. With the acquisition of the broker Hidden Road for $1.25 billion, the crypto company is not just strengthening its arsenal. According to lawyer John Deaton, Ripple aims much higher: capturing a share of an institutional market estimated at $16 trillion. Behind this discreet operation lies a gigantic ambition: to become one of the pillars of the finance of tomorrow.

In Brief

  • Ripple acquires Hidden Road for $1.25 billion and reveals ambitions far beyond traditional payments.
  • Hidden Road handles over $3 trillion in annual transactions for 300 institutional clients.
  • John Deaton states that this acquisition marks Ripple’s discreet entry into the $16 trillion institutional market.
  • Ripple’s goal is to become a major player in the tokenization of assets such as stocks, bonds, and real estate.

A major offensive on cross-border payments

Ripple has officially completed the acquisition of Hidden Road, a leading broker, for $1.25 billion, which sparked strong interest in the crypto ecosystem. Indeed, Hidden Road processes over $3 trillion in annual transactions for more than 300 institutional clients.

Such a deal goes far beyond a simple financial acquisition. As lawyer John Deaton emphasized in a post on April 28, 2025, on the social network X (formerly Twitter), “this acquisition shows that Ripple aims far more than the classic expansion of its payment services”.

He stresses the company’s determination to strategically position itself in institutional finance.

Concretely, Ripple pursues a well-defined expansion strategy, illustrated by several major initiatives:

  • The integration of the XRP Ledger (XRPL) in Hidden Road’s settlement operations;
  • The launch of Ripple Custody, an offering dedicated to crypto custody;
  • Strategic acquisitions of Metaco and Standard Custody, strengthening its expertise in digital asset custody.

These steps demonstrate a clear intention to offer financial institutions end-to-end blockchain services, far beyond traditional payments and transfers.

A strategy focused on massive asset tokenization

For John Deaton, the scope of this acquisition is much more ambitious. He elaborates in his analysis:

Ripple is quietly preparing its positioning as a key player for institutions wishing to enter the blockchain universe.

He clarifies that the company no longer just offers payment solutions, but is building a comprehensive offering that integrates asset custody, payments, and stablecoin issuance, all necessary initiatives to support large-scale tokenization.

According to estimates cited by Deaton, the global market for tokenized asset custody could exceed $16 trillion by the end of this decade.

Ripple is thus building a real infrastructure aimed at banks and asset managers who want to digitize traditional asset classes such as stocks, bonds, and even real estate. Thanks to its RLUSD stablecoin, which will serve as a settlement tool, Ripple intends to capture a significant share of this emerging market.

This operation could mark a major turning point for Ripple, far beyond its historical activities in cross-border payments. If the strategy holds, the company could become one of the pillars of tomorrow’s finance, actively participating in the transition to widespread asset tokenization. However, many challenges remain, notably regarding institutional adoption and competition with other specialized blockchains.

Will “continual learning” AI extend the memory “shortage” until 2031?

Citi believes that as AI enters the era of "continuous learning" beyond simple training and inference stages, demand for HBM, server DDR5, and enterprise SSDs (eSSD) will experience explosive and simultaneous growth starting from 2027. While demand will surge rapidly, the supply side is constrained by HBM production capacity usage and slower technology migration, leading to expansion lagging far behind demand. This supply-demand imbalance is expected to continue until 2031.
