Report: Broadcom's debt deal is expected to exceed 70 billions dollars

Broadcom is currently in talks to raise between 70 and 80 billions USD in debt financing to support chip procurement needs for AI companies such as Anthropic. The proposed financing will be structured in tiers, with a senior tranche of approximately 45 billions USD and a subordinated tranche of around 35 billions USD.

Broadcom is seeking one of the largest AI infrastructure financings to date, highlighting the technology industry's unprecedented reliance on capital markets to support the expansion of artificial intelligence.

On August 21, CNBC, citing sources, confirmed that Broadcom is negotiating a debt financing deal with a size ranging from $70 billion to $80 billion. The funds raised will be used to support chip procurement needs for AI companies, including Anthropic.

As previously mentioned by Wallstreetcn, prior reports indicated that Broadcom is in talks with Blackstone and Apollo Global Management to raise up to $100 billion for an AI chip financing deal via an SPV, which would mark the largest SPV financing transaction to date.

Following the announcement, Broadcom's share price rose slightly by more than 1% on Friday. However, analysts believe that this massive debt deal is unlikely to ease market pressure and could further transmit risk premiums to other chipmakers and hyperscale cloud providers.

Bonds and derivatives markets reacted in opposite directions. After the initial news was released, Broadcom CDS surged on Thursday, reaching an all-time high.

Layered Financing Structure, Size Still Uncertain

According to reports, the debt financing plans to adopt a layered structure: the most senior and first-to-be-repaid tranche (senior tranche) is expected to be about $45 billion, while the junior tranche will be about $35 billion; however, these figures are still subject to ongoing adjustments.

Blackstone and Apollo previously led Broadcom’s initial $35 billion financing, and this round will significantly expand on that basis.

In June this year, Broadcom announced a new AI platform aiming to provide 20 gigawatts of compute capacity for Anthropic and OpenAI. This financing move is a continuation of that strategic initiative.

Chip Giants Race to Tap Capital Markets

Broadcom’s financing is not unique. This week, Nvidia disclosed in a securities filing that it will provide up to $105 billion in financing support for OpenAI’s new data center in Ohio.

Just a week ago, Nvidia also announced a partnership with six major asset management firms to launch a $500 billion financing plan, aiming to position compute infrastructure as an emerging asset class.

These back-to-back mega financing transactions indicate that tech companies are tapping the debt market on a record scale to meet the capital demands brought by surging AI models and workloads.

For investors, this trend reflects strong market confidence in AI’s long-term demand, but also implies that the growing debt burden and financing risks of related companies warrant continued attention.
