Walmart shares fell more than 8% during trading after the company's updated annual performance outlook failed to impress investors. However, Chief Financial Officer John David Rainey stated during a conference call with analysts that it is important to remember the new forecast was made against the backdrop of the company facing more than $2 billion in incremental costs related to rising fuel prices this year. Rainey added that, compared to February when Walmart first released its full-year outlook, the new guidance also faces what could be described as an even weaker consumer environment: "Therefore, we believe it is prudent to only moderately raise the guidance and remain cautious."
