India’s Foreign Money Crackdown: What It Means for Bitcoin Prices and Indian Holders

The Indian government is tightening its hold on money flowing out of the country as the Income Tax Department has flagged suspicious foreign remittances. Now, the authority is scrutinizing unusual overseas transfers and possible reporting issues. While the department remains suspicious of transfers linked to entities with no reported business activity, Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are out of focus.

However, the timing of the move is important for Bitcoin holders in India. As the Federal Reserve’s meeting minutes are due today, Bitcoin could see significant volatility. The current depreciation in the rupee could further amplify this move.

The Income Tax Department of India has started a verification process across the nation after identifying suspicious overseas transfers. As per the agency, a large amount of money is sent abroad despite reporting little or no business activity. The department stated that some of the transfers failed to match the entities’ reported turnover or the mentioned purpose. This has raised concerns over possible irregularities.

Notably, the investigation began with a fictitious charitable trust. The probe reportedly uncovered a wider network involved in suspicious foreign remittances. Companies, individuals, and accountants possibly involved are now under scrutiny, covering around 394 entities and 36 professionals.

There are no new restrictions imposed on Indians investing overseas. Instead, the authority is paying closer attention to these transfers. Investors are required to keep the source and purpose of overseas funds clear and properly documented.

Although this is not a crypto-specific crackdown, Bitcoin investors in India are now under increased pressure. The scrutiny is relevant for people who move capital abroad. But what concerns Bitcoin investors is its timing. The Fed meeting minutes are expected today. This development could significantly impact the BTC price. Any move in BTC/USD, along with changes in USD/INR, could have a direct impact on Indian Bitcoin investors.

It is worth noting that the probe is actually focusing on suspicious foreign transfers, not crypto. Thus, for Bitcoin investors, the connection is indirect. The bigger factors remain BTC/USD, the rupee, and the Fed’s minutes.

Significantly, the connection between the Income Tax Department’s latest probe and Bitcoin is mainly about investor behaviour. Bitcoin is not directly connected to the investigation. Usually, Bitcoin offers investors a global asset that could be bought and held across borders. Thus, the unusual scrutiny over foreign money flow could bring an unwanted layer of caution among Indian Bitcoin holders.

However, it is reassuring that the tax department’s action doesn’t target BTC. So, BTC and crypto holders will be more affected by global Bitcoin volatility and rupee movements rather than the tax department’s actions.

As of press time, the Bitcoin price is marked at $64,469, with a marginal 0.3% daily uptick. The cryptocurrency is now more than 50% down from its all-time high of $126k. As it continues to hover around this level for weeks, it indicates that BTC is struggling to regain its momentum.

Now, the focus shifts to today’s Fed meeting minutes. The report could offer fresh hints at the central bank’s potential policy decisions. As the market reassesses chances for another interest rate hike, today’s Fed minutes are crucial. If the Federal Reserve reveals a hawkish stance, it could push the BTC price to further declines. On the other hand, a dovish tone could strengthen its upward push.

Although Bitcoin is globally valued in US dollars, it is only a part of the broader picture for Indian investors. What is more important to check is the connection between BTC/USD and BTC/INR. While Indian investors evaluate the crypto based on its INR value, it will become dangerous to avoid its USD rate.

This is because a weaker rupee can push BTC higher in INR even when the BTC/USD remains flat. If BTC falls in dollar terms and the rupee remains weaker, the decline in BTC/INR will be smaller. This provides a partial cushion for Indian Bitcoin investors. But a weaker rupee does not protect investors from the sharp BTC falls.

It is important for Indian investors to keep an eye on three figures: BTC/USD, USD/INR and BTC/INR. BTC/USD offers a clear picture of how Bitcoin reacts to global markets. USD/INR shows the rupee’s movement against the US dollar. BTC/INR shows the value of the crypto in the rupee. However, the immediate focus in the Indian crypto market is the Fed minutes and the Bitcoin price’s reaction to it.
