Altseason 3.0 Is Coming Faster Than Expected: 4 Altcoins to Watch as Fed Minutes and Trump’s Crypto Summit Set the Stage for a September Breakout

  • Fed minutes on August 19, a White House crypto summit the same day, and the CFTC’s first Innovation Advisory Committee meeting on August 20.
  • The CLARITY Act, which would divide crypto oversight between the SEC and CFTC, remains stalled in the Senate, with a procedural vote not scheduled until September 15 and passage odds under 25 percent.
  • XRP, SOL, DOT, SUI and APT are each exposed in different ways to how regulators classify digital assets, making this week’s outcomes a potential catalyst for volatility across the group.

Washington is hosting three separate crypto-relevant events within 48 hours this week, and traders are watching all three for hints about where digital asset regulation heads next. The Federal Reserve released the minutes from its July 28–29 policy meeting on Wednesday, August 19, giving markets a fuller picture of how officials weighed inflation risk against a softening labor market before their next decision in September. On the same day, President Donald Trump is expected to host crypto and prediction-market executives at the White House, with SEC Chair Paul Atkins and CFTC Chair Michael Selig also expected to attend.

The main attraction of the Wednesday showdown is the so-called CLARITY Act, which aims to resolve a longstanding battle between the SEC and CFTC over who should regulate most digital assets. The House passed its version last July, and the Senate Banking Committee has advanced a companion bill in May; the bill has not yet been voted on by the full Senate but was left for recess in August.

CFTC convenes the initial meeting of its Innovation Advisory Committee a day later on Thursday, August 20, which features Coinbase’s chief executive Brian Armstrong and Ripple’s chief executive Brad Garlinghouse among its 35 members. The following are a few of the tokens that are near the center of this debate, which are associated for various reasons with their construction and their function.

XRP(XRP): The Payments Token Still Defined By Its Court Case

The XRP Ledger is a payment-oriented blockchain that is linked to Ripple Labs and is designed to facilitate cross-border transactions quickly and cheaply, with the native token of the network being XRP. The token has been at the heart of the U.S. regulatory debate for years, as the SEC sued Ripple in 2020, asking for a determination of whether XRP sales constituted unregistered securities offerings. That case helped spark much of the current debate surrounding the CLARITY Act, as the legislation would formally classify the use of tokens such as XRP in the future as either securities law or commodities law.

Solana(SOL): The High-Speed Network Exchanges Run On

Solana is a layer-one blockchain famous for its high transaction throughput and low fees, and its native token, SOL, is extensively used to settle transactions for trading purposes and consumer-facing crypto merchandise. Solana handles a high volume of activity and therefore has a direct impact on regulatory decisions affecting custody and asset classification for its ecosystem of exchanges and developers.

Polkadot(DOT): The Interoperability Bet Behind Polkadot

Polkadot’s token will be used by the network to enable isolated blockchains to interact to exchange security via a network of interconnected chains called parachains. The emphasis of Polkadot is not so much on the speed itself, but on the interoperability, which makes it an infrastructure that other blockchain projects can connect to. This is especially important for the cross-chain transfer of assets, which is currently a subject of regulatory uncertainty.

Sui(SUI): A Newer Network With No Regulatory Track Record

SUI is the native token of the newer layer-one blockchain Sui, which is written in the Move programming language from which Meta’s former Diem project was built. Sui positions itself on the speed of finality and scalability for gamers and consumer users. It’s also a relatively new network, compared to others, so the classification system isn’t as established as the other ones, and would largely be a clean slate for the new network.

Aptos(APT): Aptos And The Same Untested Question

APT is the token of another layer-one blockchain, Aptos, which is also developed by the people who developed Sui’s founding team, former Meta engineers, in the same Diem project. Aptos has been working on enterprise / institutional partnerships as well as consumer cases. Similar to Sui, it hasn’t been classified under any defined rule in any of the potential frameworks of the U.S. and will be a point of interest if regulatory signals are given at this week’s meetings. All outcomes are possible, and volatility in all three events this week is widely anticipated, irrespective of what is decided.
