Could You Use XRPL Without Buying XRP First? What XLS-68 Actually Changes

Under the model, users can retain control of their wallets and private keys while a sponsor assumes responsibility for eligible network expenses. However, XRP itself does not disappear from the process. Instead, the responsibility for providing and spending it shifts from the user to the sponsor.

Under the current structure described by Ctrl Alt, XRPL accounts call for a minimum XRP reserve to remain active, while ledger objects such as trustlines require additional reserves.

XLS-68 introduces a sponsor-beneficiary structure. The benefactor can fund the XRP reserve needed to activate a beneficiary’s account and cover reserves associated with supported ledger objects.

As a result, users would not need to purchase XRP themselves to meet those requirements. They could engage with approved assets without having to manage XRP for reserves or fees.

That does not mean XRP is removed from transactions. The XRP transaction fee is still burned, but the sponsor provides the XRP used to cover that cost.

The sponsor is responsible for the amount of money and any fees that are incurred, while the recipient is responsible for holding the keys and wallet.

The system also provides a feature to enable platforms to sponsor reliable lines for specific assets. This means users can receive and trade with approved tokens without first acquiring XRP to fund the related reserve.

Sponsors can set which wallets, tokens, and actions qualify for sponsorship. Sponsored reserves can also be reclaimed or transferred under the stated lifecycle rules.

The sponsorship model still depends on the sponsor having sufficient XRP to cover eligible costs. The provided details state that transactions requiring sponsorship are held when the sponsor lacks enough funds. Therefore, users would not suddenly need to buy XRP to complete that transaction.

If an account is inactive, the benefactor can withdraw their reserved XRP from that account. If a user wants to keep the wallet after sponsorship ends, the user can fund the account themselves or obtain another sponsor.
